KYBELLA® is a new nonsurgical treatment for submental fullness, sometimes referred to as “double chin." Each treatment session with KYBELLA® is typically 15 to 20 minutes, given right here in our office.

What is “submental fullness"?

Submental fullness is the medical term your doctor might use to describe the unwanted fullness’ beneath your chin, which can be the result of moderate to severe fat below the chin. This may be commonly known as a “double chin”.

What causes submental fullness?

Submental fullness due to fat beneath the chin can impact a broad range of both male and female adults. Some possible causes are genetics, weight gain, and aging.

Isn’t a double chin associated with being overweight?

Sometimes, even with diet and exercise, the unwanted fullness may not go away. Genetic, weight gain, or aging can be a cause of submental fullness due to fat beneath the chin.

What is Kybella®?

Kybella® is the first and only FDA-approved injectable treatment to improve the appearance of moderate to severe fat beneath the chin* by physically destroying fat cells*.

How does Kybella® work?

When injected into the area beneath your chin, Kybella® destroys fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat. The active ingredient in Kybella® is deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat.

Is Kybella® right for me?

According to a 2015 survey conducted by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, 67% of people said they are bothered by the fullness beneath their chin. Sometimes, even with diet or exercise, the unwanted fullness may not go away. If you can relate, talk to your doctor to determine if Kybella® might be right for you.

How many Kybella® treatments will I need?

Your healthcare provider will help you determine how many treatment sessions you need based on the amount and distribution of your submental fat and your personal treatment goals. Up to 6 treatments may be administered, spaced no less than 1 month apart.

How long does Kybella® last? Will I need further treatment?

Once the aesthetic effect is achieved, further treatment in not expected.

How is Kybella® administered?

Kybella® is a nonsurgical treatment administered during an in-office visit. The injection process may take 15 to 20 minutes. Your healthcare provider will give you a series of injections into the fat under your chin at each treatment session.

Will I experience any side effects?

Kybella® can cause serious side effects, including nerve injury in the jaw (which can cause an uneven smile or facial muscle weakness, as experienced by 4 out of every 100 people in clinical studies) and trouble swallowing (experienced by 2 out of every 100 people in clinical studies). The most common side effects include swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness, and areas of hardness in the treatment area.

What can I expect after the procedure?

You should be able to resume normal activities after the procedure. You are likely to have swelling, so keep your social plans and work commitments in mind when scheduling treatments. For many people, downtime with Kybella® occurred most commonly after the first treatment session.

Will the injections hurt?

There may be some pain associated with a Kybella® injection.

Prior to your treatment session, your healthcare provider may apply ice/cold packs or topical and/or injectable local anesthesia to the treatment area to make you more comfortable. After treatment, apply ice or a cold pack to the treatment area as needed.

What results can I expect with Kybella®?

In clinical studies, 79% of people treated with Kybella® had improved satisfaction with the appearance of the area beneath their chin (compared with 34% of people treated with a placebo) 12 weeks after their last treatment.

Kybella® patients also reported improvement in the visual and emotional impact of submental fat when asked how happy, bothered, self-conscious, embarrassed, old and overweight they felt with respect to the amount of their submental fat after they received treatment.

When will I see results?

Although results are noticeable, they are not immediate. Kybella® works gradually to destroy fat cells. Once the aesthetic effect is achieved, further treatment with Kybella® is not expected.
